Reading the Word

I recently began a new Bible reading plan using my YouVersion iPhone app. This one takes you through the entire New Testament and Psalms. I’ve followed several plans over the years, including reading the Bible completely through in a year…twice. Regardless of the plan, there is something I have noticed. When I’m in God’s Word things seem more manageable. Let me explain.

Most of my readers know I have been through many trials over the past few years…unemployed, financial concerns, divorce. Life hasn’t been all that great for me. There are times when depression sets in and I feel overwhelmed. I’ll admit there have been days when I’ve questioned whether I could even go on. But, I look back at those dark days and I realize that I was not reading the Word during those times. Maybe God was trying to get my attention focused back where it needed to be.

Once I began reading the Bible again on a regular basis things seemed to calm down. Don’t misunderstand…I still have issues to deal with. The problems I have are still very real and very present. However, I’ve found less depression and more positive outlooks. I think when we are in the Word, God sends us just what we need, when we need it. He isn’t taking the problem away, but He is giving us direction on how to positively deal with it. At least that’s how I see it.

What does this all mean, and why am I sharing it? I think there are others out there who may be experiencing some of the same emotions I have…anger, depression, hopelessness. These things may not go away, but God’s Word gives us hope and reassurance. We are certain to face trials, but He is the great healer and comforter. Study His book and rest assured in His arms.
