Young Band…Great Results!

My oldest daughter, Rachel, is a proud member of the Page High School Marching Patriots. She is one of many rookies in the band. In fact, about half of the band this year is 8th and 9th graders with no previous marching experience. Add to that a new band director, and you have what many thought would be an off year. Were they ever wrong!

This past Saturday the band competed in the Tennessee Division II State Championship. They were one of 20 bands in the competition, and our young band proved themselves in a huge way. They performed very well in the preliminary show and went into the finals in the top 5. Their performance in the finals was the best of the year, without a doubt! The kids looked and sounded fantastic, and I felt good about their chances of finishing in the top 5 at the end of the night.

Our young band did indeed finish well. They took 2nd place overall and 1st place for color guard. The announcer at the contest said it was very close, and that it was. We finished just .03 points behind the first place band. WOW!

It was a great marching season for these kids. They worked hard and came a long way. I remember the first football game when they hardly knew the first song. It is amazing to see how much they have improved. The kids were super excited over their 2nd place finish. They knew how far thy had come and were right to be proud of themselves for what they accomplished.

As a band dad, I am very proud of the band and my Rachel. I told her at the beginning of the year that band is a family. She understands that now. She has made some great friendships that will last a long time. Likewise, it has been a pleasure getting to know so many great kids and parents. I look forward to spending many more years with them and the PHS Marching Patriots.
