Maybe We Did Make a Difference

Can anyone tell me why it’s so hard to pray, but easy to swear? Why clubs are growing and churches are shrinking? Why it’s so hard to repost a christian status, but easy to post some gossip? why we get worried when our phone gets taken away, but not our bible? Why we can worship a celebrity, but not Christ? You gonna ignore this? Christ said, if you deny me in front of your friends, I will deny thee in front of my father. Re-post if you’re not worried about what your friends will think.

What you see above was posted on someone’s Facebook wall tonight. The reason I’m sharing this is because of who posted it. The girl was one of the players on the Upward Basketball team I helped coach 3 years ago. Now, I don’t know if her being on that team had any influence in the decision to post this statement of faith. However, I do know that the ultimate goal of Upward Sports is to teach kids about Jesus Christ. So, maybe…in some small way…we coaches did have an impact on a kid’s life. Whether or not that is true, it does make me feel good seeing one of my former players stepping out and putting this post out there for all her friends to see. You have made your old coach proud! 🙂

  1. Yes, you DID make a difference…and you always are as long as we take a breath on this planet. I think so often we forget that we are always being watched and observed — by non-believers, yes — but also by those that believe as we do. I came across a passage yesterday in my bible study time that made me think – I Timothy 4:12…” don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young (Paul’s letter to Timothy – he was very young in age), but SET AN EXAMPLE for the BELIEVERS…”

then Paul continues in verse 15, ” Be diligent in these matters, give yourself wholly to them, so that EVERYONE MAY SEE YOUR PROGRESS.”

This is what really hit me — believers and non-believers alike should be able to see a change in us as we go through life — it should be obvious that we are becoming more and more like Christ —- our values should become more Christ-like, our entertainment preferences should become more Christ-like, our speech…and so on and so forth.

For me, it means that I should be changing regularly…being molded by God’s Word as the Holy Spirit works on tough areas in my life….so that I can be a better “light”, a better example of Him — with the goal of directing people to Jesus….

So Mike, keep up the good work….both at home and where you involve yourself in other people’s lives. Kids ARE watching…they are mimicking what they see….let us not be a stumbling block for them…

    In this together….one day at a time….as believers…..
