Music Has Taken Over My Life

“Music has taken over my life!”

These were the words uttered by my oldest daughter, Rachel, the other day following marching band practice. She is right. Music really has taken over much of her life. Let me tell you why.

This year is her first as a member of the marching band. That in and of itself takes up tons of time. They practice every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Then they have football games on Friday night, followed by Saturday practice from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. The only exceptions to this schedule are holidays (Labor Day weekend) and Fall Break, or Saturday competitions. The girl is busy enough with just that. But…

She also has her regular band class during school each day. I know that doesn’t consume nearly as much time as marching band, but there is still the commitment to practice, learn the music, and play in the concerts.

As I said, marching band is taking up Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. That leaves Wednesday and Sunday. Free time, right? Wrong! Rachel also plays in one of the middle school praise bands at church. They perform during the middle school worship service every other Wednesday night. Then they rehearse every Sunday afternoon, thus filling every day of her week with music.

Rachel was correct when she said music has taken over her life. However, I don’t think that is a bad thing (and neither does she). She loves it! She is having a blast with marching band and really loves playing in the praise band. I know it is a lot of work, but as I told her, it is well worth it. I know she will be glad she put in all the time and effort. Music is important to me, and I’m happy to see Rachel developing a passion for it as well. I hope she continues to learn and keeps playing for years to come. I want her to always love music – even if it takes over her life. 🙂
