Meltdown in Mississippi

The Vols traveled to Oxford, MS today to face Ole Miss. The best I can describe what happened is a total meltdown by the Vols on both sides of the ball. The Rebels, led by Dexter McCluster, rolled easily to a 42-17 win over Tennessee.

The Vols struggled on both sides of the ball. The offense looked more like that of the first few games than the offense of late. QB Jonathan Crompton ended the day 20 of 37 for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns. The running game was about the worst I’ve seen this year. The Vols rushed for only 99 yards and ended the day managing only 275 total yards.
The defense, which has been outstanding this year, folded today and gave up 492 yards to Ole Miss, 359 of which came on the ground. Rebels running back Dexter McCluster rushed for 282 yards, the most ever given to a running back in a game by the Volunteers. He finished the day with 324 all-purpose yards. The Vols defense just could not find a way to stop McCluster and the Rebels. This was by far the worst defensive performance from the Vols this season.
So, Tennessee is now down to the last 2…Vandy and Kentucky. If these games play out the way I think they will, the Vols will end the season with 2 wins and a 7-5 record and, hopefully, a bowl appearance.
