I’ll confess my expectations were not very high today as Georgia traveled to Knoxville to take on the Vols. To be honest, I’m not sure anyone expected much from a struggling Tennessee offense. Much to my surprise the Vols stepped up on both sides of the ball and took it to the Dawgs, defeating them 45-19.

Jonathan Crompton, who has been absolutely horrible thru the first 5 games, looked like a completely different person as he completed 20-of-27 for a career high 310 yards and 4 TD’s. The offensive line did a nice job giving Crompton time, and the receivers were much improved this week catching almost everything that came their way. Gerald Jones had the hot hands with 5 receptions for 105 yards and 2 TD’s. Play action passes seemed to work best today, which makes me wonder if Crompton has finally found his niche.

The running game worked very well once again, with senior Montario Hardesty leading the way. He carried the ball 20 times for 97 yards and a TD. Freshman Bryce Brown added 21 yards and a TD to his stats.

Defensively the Vols played another stellar game. They held the Bulldogs to only 89 rushing yards and 152 through the air. The defense kept good pressure on Georgia QB Joe Cox and forced 2 interceptions. The Vols defense really stepped up at key moments in the game to make big stops against the UGA offense.

The only couple of sour notes in the game were and interception thrown by Crompton and the 7 penalties committed by the Vols. Otherwise they looked the best they have all season.

Hopefully today’s victory will spark new life in this team. They still have a tough road ahead, the toughest game coming in 2 weeks @ Alabama. If the Vols can play the way they did today I think they have a pretty good shot at finishing this year with a winning record. My fingers are crossed!

GO VOLS!!!!!
