At the beginning of the year I began reading the Bible through from Genesis to Revelation. This makes the second year I have done that, and I’m happy to report that I am on track. In fact, I just started Proverbs yesterday. There is so much wisdom packed in the pages of the Bible, and Proverbs is a great place to find much of it. I love how the book begins by telling the reader the purpose of the text.
The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
For gaining wisdom and being instructed; for understanding insightful sayings;
for receiving wise instruction [in] righteousness, justice, and integrity;
for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man-
a wise man will listen and increase his learning, and a discerning man will obtain guidance-
for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
(Proverbs 1:1-7 HCSB)
My prayer as I read Proverbs, and as I continue reading through the rest of the Bible, is that I will gain wisdom and understanding, seek wise instruction, and increase in knowledge. I invite you to join me and read along.
