When it comes to reading, our kids could not be more different. Rachel absolutely loves to read. She would rather read than anything. Almost every night we find her in her room well after bedtime still reading. She can get a 500 page book today and be finished tomorrow. I’ll say reading is her passion!
Elise, on the other hand, is not quite as motivated to read as her sister. We are constantly trying to find ways to motivate her to read. Getting her to read something on her own is next to impossible. She doesn’t even want to read what is required for school. It is a constant battle with her.
With that said, I decided to pose a little challenge to her. She has to read 3 more books and write summaries on them before the end of the school year. In order to motivate her to read those 3 (and a few more over the summer) I challenged her to a reading contest. If she can read 8 of her books, which average about 80 pages each, before I can read 5 of mine she will receive a special prize. I have not selected the prize yet. If you have any suggestions please feel free to post them here in a comment.
Since Elise loves contests I hope this motivates her enough to at least read these few books. I would love for this to spark a real interest in books and make her want to read all the time, but for now we’ll take it one step at a time. I’ll post the results of our contest on the blog when we’re done.
