Trust and Obey

My Scripture reading this week has been in Deuteronomy. Several times Moses reminds the Israelites to “be careful to follow all the statutes and ordinances” that God gave them. If you’re familiar with the story of the Exodus you know that they did not always follow God’s commands. In fact, on more than one occasion they rebelled against God, but Moses interceded on behalf of the people and they were spared God’s wrath. When I read these passages I find it hard to believe that the Israelites could not trust and obey the Lord after all they had seen Him do. However, I quickly realized that we are exactly the same! We’re walking along the path of life and are often complaining, just as the Israelites did. Instead we should be praising God and thanking Him for His provision. I know I’m guilty of that. We want to trust and obey completely, but then we think we can handle things on our own and we push Him to the side. I’m sure God feels the same about us as He did about the Israelites. There are times when we can get so out of touch with His will and I’m sure His anger burns against us. Fortunately we have someone to intercede for us as well – Jesus Christ! Scripture tells us that “He also is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us” (Romans 8:34). That is such a comforting truth for sinners like us!

Father, help me today, and every day, to trust You in everything and to obey Your commands.
