Upward Basketball

Today marked the beginning of our Upward Basketball season. I am the assistant coach for Rachel’s team (the Sky) this year. The girls got off to a great start. Coach Jim (our head coach) and I were very pleased with the girls’ performance. They were very aggressive on defense and exhibited good ball control on offense. They played well on both sides of the ball and came away with a victory!
One of the great things about Upward is the awarding of the stars after each game. There are 5 different color stars, each representing a positive quality displayed on the court. Red = best defense; blue = best effort; gold = sportsmanship; gray = best offense; white = most Christlike. Each week, the coaches observe the players during the game and assign the stars. The girls have a practice t-shirt that is worn under their jersey. The stars are ironed onto the sleeve of the t-shirts and become sort of a badge of honor for each player. Of course, every player’s goal is to get that white star.
I look forward to this season. This is our second year playing but my first coaching. It’s going to be lots of fun, and I can’t wait to see how the team improves over the course of the season. It was a great first game. Great job Sky!!
